Study Tours 2008

Elected Members' School:

Ardler & Stobswell, Dundee

This tour will visit Ardler, an award-winning urban village and Stobswell, an inner city suburb. The tour will complement a main paper given to the delegates the previous day by the Director of Planning & Transportation at Dundee City Council.

Golf and Development

Renowned the world over as the home of golf, this tour will take you to golf developments - new and old - and review the management issues based around the St Andrews courses and adjacent areas such as Kingsbarns. The benefits and challenges of meeting a global demand in a small Scottish burgh town will be discussed by those directly involved.

Perth City Centre

Walking tour of key city centre development sites to show regeneration strategy for city centre in relation to retail/cultural and transport investment, finishing with a tour of the Concert Hall which is a fundamental component of the strategy that has been completed and given a national regeneration award.

St Andrews

This is a guided walking tour around St Andrews and, time permitting, a trip to some East Neuk villages. The walking element will look at how St Andrews has accommodated contemporary architecture with the heritage of the old town and University precincts. The East Neuk trip will offer the chance to see the results of heritage grant schemes, improvement schemes and development management.

Planners' School 1:

East Neuk Village & The Coast

This tour will look at initiatives for economic regeneration, tourism and how the East Neuk villages have responded to the demise of the fishing industry in Fife through, for example, harbour development and arts initiatives. Offshore renewable energy will be examined as an opportunity to help renew Levenmouth by visiting the Energy Park Fife which is helping to drive Scotland's renewable future.

Dundee Cycling Tour

An environmentally friendly way of gaining a close at hand appreciation of community regeneration in Dundee, following the city’s Green Circular with plenty of opportunity to stop and discuss a variety of planning issues along the way. Please note the route will be mostly flat or downhill but delegates must be able to ride a bike confidently and be reasonably fit (limited numbers on tour).

Perth Flood Prevention Scheme

The Perth Flood Prevention Scheme was completed in 2001 and has been remarkably successful in terms of flood protection and amenity value. It has created walkways, cycle tracks and viewing platforms as well as a number of features to try and enhance biodiversity. The scheme also incorporates artwork and a short walk will be taken to demonstrate the different methods used to provide a purposeful defence but allow residents and visitors to continue to enjoy the river.

New Upper Forth Crossing

The UFC posed a significant environmental, as well as technical, geological and logistical challenge and the tour will focus on the former and in particular the issues relating to the salt marshes and mud flats of the Forth Estuary which are an internationally important habitat. The Tour will feature a visit to the completed structure and will include a presentation on the 10 years of detailed studies which concluded in the best option from an environmental, engineering and a traffic point of view.

Planners' School 2:

Dundee Central Waterfront & City Centre

This walking tour of Dundee will give delegates the opportunity to learn about the city’s largest current planning project and to experience planning issues in and around the city centre.

Golf & Development

Renowned the world over as the home of golf, this tour will take you to golf developments - new and old - and review the management issues based around the St Andrews courses and adjacent areas such as Kingsbarns. The benefits and challenges of meeting a global demand in a small Scottish burgh town will be discussed by those directly involved.

Stirling-Alloa-Kincardine Rail Project

This major infrastructure project will re-open approximately 21km of existing, disused and abandoned railway lines between Stirling Station and Longannet Power Station at Kincardine. Re-opening the railway will deliver major economic, social and environmental benefits to the communities directly concerned and also to the wider Scottish economy, crucially including less rail congestion on the strategically important Forth Rail Bridge. The tour is expected to involve a trip on the new passenger service and a short presentation on how such a major project was directly sponsored through the Development Plan of Scotland's smallest mainland planning service, involving the promotion of a unique Private Bill in the new Scottish Parliament.
